Android 15 Beta 4: Final Beta Release Brings Important Updates

Android 15 Beta 4

Google has released Android 15 Beta 4, marking the last scheduled update in the Android 15 beta testing program. This release finalizes all APIs and system behaviors, setting the stage for the official launch.

Emoji Evolution and Bug Fixes in Android 15 Beta 4

A significant change in Android 15 Beta 4 is the removal of the legacy PNG-based emoji font file (NotoColorEmojiLegacy.ttf). Some Android 15 devices, including Pixel phones, will now exclusively use vector-based emoji files. Developers should adapt by using platform text rendering, ensuring text libraries support COLRv1 fonts, or bundling the legacy emoji font into APKs if necessary.

The new build number is AP31.240617.009, updated from AP31.240517.031, with the security patch level set to July 2024.

Several issues have been addressed in this beta. These include fixing contrast issues in Quick Settings Tiles, resolving a rare bootloop problem on some Pixel devices after factory resets, and improving app notification settings restoration from backups. Face Unlock enrollment for Pixel Fold devices has also been enhanced.

Bluetooth improvements feature prominently in this update. The Digital Car Key app now performs better with low latency scans, and the head-tracking service has been refined. Pairing success rates have been improved by adjusting how the system handles transport mismatches when using Bluetooth LE.

New Device Diagnostics Feature

Beta 4 introduces a new Device Diagnostics feature under Settings > System. This tool allows users to test their device’s components, including display, touch sensors, battery status, and storage health. An intriguing Evaluation Mode enables inter-device testing via QR code scanning, opening up new possibilities for troubleshooting.

The Component Health section provides detailed information about the device’s battery, including its current capacity as a percentage of the original, the number of charge cycles, and manufacturing and first usage dates. Users can also check their storage status, viewing the remaining lifetime as a percentage.

What’s Next for Developers and Users

With APIs and behaviors now finalized, developers should focus on thorough testing and ensuring compatibility with the new emoji system. The stable release of Android 15 is expected soon, making this beta a crucial opportunity for final testing and refinement.

For those interested in trying Beta 4, factory images and OTA updates are available on the Android developer website. Users can also sign up for the beta program for over-the-air upgrades. As Android 15’s release approaches, this update promises a robust and feature-rich addition to the Android ecosystem.
